Thanks to a new community outreach initiative started by the park this spring, St. Joseph Peninsula State Park will be hosting two more educational programs from local groups this summer.
The first program, Kayak Fishing 101, is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET Saturday, May 20 and will be presented by Captain Jeff Ross of SeaGrass Charters. Attendees will learn all about the basics of kayak fishing. Tips on gear and equipment for inshore kayak fishing will be presented. Topics such as advantages of certain kayaks over others, fundamental equipment for kayakers, basic fishing gear one will need, and basic knots will be discussed during the program.
The second program is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET Friday, June 23 and will cover the St. Joseph State Buffer Preserve. Buffer Preserve staff members Sandra Chafin and Dylan Shoemaker will give an informative and fun presentation about what the Buffer Preserve is and what the staff at the Buffer Preserve do to help protect the incredible area surrounding St. Joseph's Bay.
All outreach presentations will be held at the Bay View Pavilion. The programs are free, though regular park admission fees apply.
As part of the outreach initiative, Park Ranger Lindsay Sartory will be participating in the Northwest Regional Library System’s Summer Reading Program, “Build a Better World.” Ranger Sartory will be presenting a program on Conserving and Protecting Nature at the Charles Whitehead-Wewahitchka Public Library in Wewahitchka at 3:30 p.m. CT June 6 and a Sea Turtle Program at the Corinne Costin Gibson Memorial Public Library in Port St. Joe at 2 p.m. ET on June 20.
St. Joseph Peninsula State Park is excited about the outreach efforts and hopes that other community groups consider the park as a venue for educating others.
If you belong to a group or organization that would be interested in presenting at the park or having a Park Ranger present an educational program at a meeting or event, please contact the park office 227-1327.
