The First United Methodist Church of Port St. Joe’s Young Singers Choir, will perform John Rutter’s “Look at the World” Sunday, Nov. 19 at the 11 a.m. ET service at the First United Methodist Church. This children’s chorus will be accompanied by Janis Ramos on the piano and the FUMC Chancel Choir. The Young Singers, a group of 25 children from our local area.
Dana Langford is the director of this newly formed children’s choir. Dana, originally from Oneonta, Alabama graduated from Auburn University with a BS in Music Education and a Masters in Education where she was in Auburn University Singers and Student Conductor of the Concert Choir. Dana then took her talents to LaGrange, Georgia where she conducted concert and show choirs along with middle school choruses for the LaGrange Public School System. Her show choirs competed in Orlando and Washington DC. Dana has been associated with numerous church and volunteer choirs. She and her husband Steve moved to Cape San Blas in 2009 where they soon joined Port St. Joe First United Methodist Church and she became a member of the church’s Chancel Choir. Desiring to continue her passion for conducting, she has formed the PSJFUMC Young Singers teaching young voices in grades 2nd through 5th. Dana is excited to be conducting with the Bay Area Choral Society this year.
Dana is teaching the Kodaly method which uses a child-developmental approach to sequence, introducing skills according to the capabilities of the child. They are using body movement, breathing techniques, rhythm syllables, melodic sequence warm ups and hand signs. The children move seamlessly through warm-ups into rehearsing music by singing Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti-Do while using hand signs. They are beginning to transfer their knowledge of interval singing into song.
Assisting with Young singers are Carla May, Tamara Marsh-Flowers, Gayle Putnal and Susan Jilian. Carla and Tamara are soloists at the church.
The PSJFUMC Young Singers will have a Christmas Concert at the First United Methodist Church on Sunday, Dec. 13 beginning at 6 p.m. ET. Please make your plans now to listen to this wonderful group of young musicians.
