The Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Clemson, Round III, is set for the College Football Playoff.

Alabama was awarded the No. 4 spot in the College Football Playoff when the field was announced Sunday.

UA (11-1) will play top-ranked Clemson (12-1) in the Sugar Bowl semifinal in New Orleans on Jan. 1. The 7:45 p.m. game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome will be televised by ESPN.

The Crimson Tide and Clemson have played in the last two national championship games, with Clemson winning last season and Alabama winning the previous season.

Oklahoma (12-1), seeded second, will face third-seeded Georgia (12-1) in the Rose Bowl semifinal, also slated for Jan. 1.

Alabama and Ohio State (11-2), which won the Big Ten championship Saturday night by defeating Wisconsin, were the top contenders for the playoff field’s fourth and final spot. Alabama sat out conference championship weekend after losing at Auburn to end the regular season, leaving UA’s fate in the hands of the selection committee.

The CFP committee settled on the Crimson Tide on the basis of Ohio State having two losses, including a 31-point defeat at Iowa.

UA was ranked No. 5 in the CFP rankings at the end of the regular season, while Ohio State was ranked eighth. OSU’s victory over the Badgers, who had been ranked fourth, wasn’t enough to vault Ohio State over the Crimson Tide in the eyes of the committee.

UA will to extend its streak of playing in the playoff in each season since the four-team system was adopted in 2014. The Crimson Tide lost to Ohio State in the semifinal round in the inaugural year. Alabama and Clemson played in the CFP championship game in the last two seasons, with Clemson winning last season and Alabama winning the season before.
