The recent Region 1-1A cross country meet, which for local schools doubled as the District 2-1A meet, ended in a Gulf County sweep.
The Wewahitchka Jr./Sr. High School girls finished first in the district contest with the Lady Tiger Sharks finishing second, despite just five, or half, the team’s runners competing.
Port St. Joe, meanwhile, had the top two individuals, with Zoe Gerlach winning the district meet in a time of 23:17 with Madelyn Gortemoller right behind in second in 23:18.
On the boys’ side, Port St. Joe’s Zach McFarland was second in the district, Ricky Forbes-Rosado sixth.
Originally, the district meet was scheduled to be held at the St. Joseph Bay Golf Club Oct. 24, but, of course, Hurricane Michael intervened.
In turn, the Florida High School Athletics Association allowed all the district teams to advance to the Region 1-1A meet, meaning the region meet was also the district meet.
When filtering the district teams’ results out, Wewahitchka took the team championship with Port St. Joe second.
Gerlach, Gortemoller, Kaylee Schweikert, Hannah Decosta and Ashton Amison were the only Port St. Joe runners to compete, with Autumn Kotelman, Lexi Plair, Jade Cothran, Quinci Elphinstone and Savannah Burkett unable to compete.
Additionally, the Port St. Joe track and surrounding fields were full with disaster relief vehicles, rendering practice a hit-and-miss proposition.
Two other Port St. Joe runners medaled for finishing in the top 15; Decostas was 11th and Schweikert was 12th.
