The horse named for a bay was in the winner’s circle in a graded stakes race again last Saturday at Santa Anita in California as St. Joe Bay won the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes by three lengths.

Aboard St. Joe Bay was Hall of Fame jockey Victor Espinoza, making a comeback from a training injury in which he suffered a broken neck last summer.

The win paid $200,000.

St. Joe Bay, now 7, was claimed for $62,500 last May.

The horse bolted to the lead last Saturday and was never challenged. Going off at 15-1, the horse paid $33.60 to win.

The win was St. Joe Bay’s third career graded victory, pushing his career earnings to $734,515.

St. Joe Bay was bred on Bonnie Heath Farm in Florida, Bonnie Heath and his wife, Kim, were long-time homeowners on Cape San Blas. The horse was named after one of Bonnie’s favorite fishing locations. --- Tim Croft
