April is Occupational Therapy month! Did you know Occupational Therapists are super heroes? Okay, so Marvel Comics probably won't pick that movie up but I would watch it if they did. Occupational Therapists super power it to help people participate in the things they want and need to do. They develop customized plans to help children with disabilities participate in school and in social situations. They work with people who have been injured to regain the skills they need for every day activities. And, they aid an older adult to stay as independent as possible.
Most people take advantage of Occupational Therapy (OT) as an outpatient. I had assistance from an OT after my rotator cuff surgery years ago and I participated as an outpatient.
Early on in my recovery I needed to learn how to take care of my daily needs in a different way. It was my right arm. That is my dominant side. I needed to learn how to hold my arm on my desk and how to move it around to do normal things at work like type, write, and answer the phone. I needed to learn how to do everything differently and use my other arm. OT personalized my plan for my goals so I could continue to take care of myself and go back to work.
Some people, especially the elderly, need inpatient treatment because of weakening from illness or because of an injury. Occupational therapy really has a chance to shine in this situation because they are making an individual evaluation to determine goals and reach those goals! Definitely super heroes!
We have such an amazing team of therapists here to get you back up and going if you need us! Remember to treat everyone with importance and always be kind.
