The Wewahitchka Jr./Sr. High School track teams competed in the District 2-1A meet at Deane Bozeman School. As the temperatures climbed into the high 80s, nine teams vied for district championship honors.

The Blountstown Tigers took the boys’ division and Port St. Joe the girls.

The Wewahitchka boys finished a solid third, and the Lady Gators earned a fifth place finish.

By finishing among the top four in their events, 15 Gator athletes moved on to the regional meet scheduled for Saturday, April 27 in Jacksonville.

The Gator contingent is led by district champions Elijah Shackelford (discus) and Mario Cole (800 meters).

Other WHS regional qualifiers include:

• Shurrell Jackson – second in the 100 and 200 meter races

• Mariah Baker – second in discus

• Karen Burch – second in 3200 meter race

• Rayanna Penix – third in 3200 meter race

• Girls 4 x 800 meter relay team of Claudia Peoples, McKenzie Hickman, Karen Burch and Madilyn Etheridge finished second

• Girls 4 x 400 meter relay team of Claudia Peoples, Hailey McDaniel, McKenzie Hickman and Shurrell Jackson finished third

• Zach McFarland – second in 3200 meters and fourth in 1600 meters

• Boys 4 x 800 team of Zach McFarland, Mario Cole, Jaylen Desrosier, Zander Hanlon finished second

• Boys 4 x 400 meter relay team of Jaylen Desrosier, Mario Cole, Alex Williams and Zach Mcfarland finished third
