Last Friday’s celebration of the Easter season at Wewahitchka Elementary School’s Pre-K classroom of Darlene Ake carried a little more heft than a simple Easter egg hunt.
Yes, the kids got to the eggs and placed them in decorated baskets, but first it was a little celebration for this year’s fundraiser sponsored by Ake to raise funds for the fight against Sanfilippo Syndrome.
Emptying piggy banks and soliciting funds from friends and relatives, the youngsters raised $600, in large part to honor two Wewahitchka children, Ross, 11, and Meredith, 6, Davis, which will be donated to the Cure Sanfilippo Foundation.
The Davis siblings have each been diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome, a progressive disorder that particularly impacts the brain and central nervous system.
While Ake’s class put together an outsized check for the formal donation to Ross, Meredith and their mother, Jessica Davis, the Cure Sanfilippo Foundation sent along a certificate and brief note of appreciation from President Glenn O’Neill. --- Tim Croft
