At this point the Wewahitchka Jr./Sr. High School softball team could likely make the trip to Vero Beach with eyes closed.
Haley Guffey tossed a three-hitter and the defending state champion Lady Gators (20-6) pounded out 14 hits Tuesday as they won the Region 1-1A title and stamped a ticket, again, to the state Class 1A Final Four.
The Lady Gators will play a semifinal against either Trenton or Frostproof at 2 p.m. ET this Tuesday.
This is Wewahitchka’s fourth consecutive region title and trip to the state semifinals.
Guffey handcuffed Northview the entire way in the region title game, allowing a single run in the top of the seventh by which time the game was far out of reach.
Guffey struck out six and walked three.
And she had plenty of offensive support.
The Lady Gators had just one extra-base hit, a double by Guffey who also singled and drove in two runs.
Wewahitchka also received three extra base runners via walk and six players were a perfect 9 for 9 in stolen bases; Gracie Price was 3 for 3 and Ashley Thompson 2 for 2.
And all those singles piled up.
Kristen Thompson was 2 for 4, drove in two and scored twice, Cyrina Madrid was 2 for 3 and scored and Price was 3 for 4 and scored three runs.
Aleah Wooten added a single, scored and drove in a run, Tamiah Rouse a two-run single and Savannah Lister an RBI single.
Katie Shealy was 1 for 2, Morgan Mayhann singled and Ashley Thompson scored.
Wewahitchka 4, Jay 3
The Lady Gators scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning last Thursday to advance to the region title game.
Wewahitchka scored two in the third inning and another in the fifth before Jay bounced back to tie the game with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Madrid paced the Wewahitchka offense, reaching base four times.
Madrid walked twice, tripled, singled, drove in two, scored once and stole three bases in three attempts as Wewahitchka was perfect in six stolen base attempts.
Wooten drove in two with a walk and sacrifice fly, Mayhann was 1 for 3 and scored twice, Shealy scored, Guffey doubled and Rouse singled as the Lady Gators were held to five hits.
Guffey started in the circle and went seven innings allowing five hits and three earned runs while walking one and striking out six.
Lister pitched the two extra frames, allowing one hit.
