Authorities on Tuesday continued the search for the alleged shooter after a man was shot and killed in St. Joe Beach.

Stephen Michael Smith, 34, of Lagrange, GA, is being sought in the shooting death of Daniel Lee Upton, 30, of Lakeland.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service has offered a $10,000 reward for any information that results in Smith’s arrest.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement Crime Scene Unit on Tuesday processed the scene at 204 Sea Pines Lane as well as a vehicle involved in the incident.

Sheriff Mike Harrison said that based on evidence gathered and interviews with witnesses the shooting is believed to be the result of a drug deal that went bad.

“Whether it was about money owed for the drugs or the drugs, we don’t know yet,” Harrison said. “We are continuing to put the pieces of the puzzle together and are seeking search warrants to further build our case.”

Investigators arrested Destiny Jene Terry, 44, early Tuesday.

Although not the shooter she was present during the shooting and helped facilitate contact between Smith and Upton, according to the GCSO.

Before losing consciousness, Upton identified Smith as the shooter and Terry as being present.

Terry was charged with being a principal to second-degree murder and is in custody at the Gulf County Jail.

The shooting occurred Monday morning in the Gulf Aire subdivision on St. Joe Beach.

Smith is a white male approximately 5-feet-10 inches tall and weighing roughly 170 pounds with brown hair and green eyes.

He is already wanted for absconding from a work release program in Georgia where he was serving a sentence for robbery.

According to a GCSO press release, local investigators are working closely with law enforcement agencies throughout the Southeast to apprehend Smith.
