John C. Gainous VFW Post 10069 and Auxiliary 10069 announced last week that Brooklyn Bishop, a sixth-grader at Port St. Joe Elementary School, is the winner of this year’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. The theme this year was “What Makes America Great.”

Brooklyn, the daughter of Jamie Bishop, presented her essay to the VFW and Auxiliary members on Dec. 10. She was awarded $150 in scholarship money from Post 10069. Her essay has advanced to District 17 competition.

Patriot’s Pen is a worldwide competition that gives students in grades 6-8 the opportunity to write a 300-400 word essay expressing their views on democracy while competing for worthwhile awards and prizes. District winners compete on the state level. At the national level, 53 finalists worldwide compete for awards ranging from $500 to $5,000.

The VFW and Auxiliary members of Post 10069 congratulate Brooklyn and encourage all Gulf County students in grades 6-8 to participate next year.
