It’s hard to ignore the folks clamoring to be the next President of the United States. Believe me, I have tried. It’s not that I don’t care. It’s more like we’re being overwhelmed!
When I ran for office on the Democratic ticket in another lifetime, I didn’t get invited on Face the Nation, nobody in the press seemed to know I was in the election and I don’t remember ever debating anyone. And if I’d a’had just a smidgen of the money the candidates are throwing around today…..I wouldn’t have been in the mess in the first place. I’d been on some fancy golf course in Montana hitting 250 yard drives right down the middle and making 40 foot putts.
Now that is what I would call a Super Tuesday!
Of course, March is historically the month where the contenders separate themselves from the pretenders. This year’s election process has been no exception.
One of the remaining players in this on-going saga has campaigned to a great extent on “Medicare for all.” What was it Will Rogers said about Prohibition back when folks were drawing up the Eighteenth Amendment—“It’s a good idea but it won’t work.”
Listen, I’m not for or against any candidate in this fray no matter his or her political persuasion. Nor am I subliminally suggesting you vote a certain way. You think for yourself on those matters.
I’m just against bad ideas no matter whom or what or how they get proposed! Leon thought it would be cool to tie a rope across the two highest buildings in our little town and “hand walk” from one to the other. And he didn’t hesitate. Well, I sure did!
He once tied a box kite to each arm and leaped off that high cliff out at the clay pits. I took one look at the wreckage below and determined in my heart to keep my feet on solid ground……
Sometimes common sense trumps exotic ideas, wayward thinking and political election gimmicks.
I am absolutely and most definitely for a fair and just system. And read my lips here, understand just a tidbit of elementary logic on “Medicare for all”…..you can’t—or shouldn’t—get something out of any system……if you haven’t put something in!
That is found in the ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Hammurabi’s Code, Aesop’s Fables and the Gettysburg Address.
Shucks, if they pass this law I’m racing down to the nearest Ford dealership and telling them I want the brand spanking new $77,000, F-150 Limited Special pickup truck with all the bells and whistles……and, oh, I didn’t bring any money. Just charge an extra $3,080 to the next twenty-five customers that come in.
Somebody has been reading Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto. We don’t need a history lesson on how that has worked over the last hundred years or so.
The concept I believe behind “Medicare for all” is that our friendly government is going to take care of everybody when they reach a certain age. Is that written into the Preamble of the Constitution? Is it engraved in stone on Mount Rushmore?
Of course, the joke here is the money for such a project doesn’t come from the government. They don’t have any money! They take it from the folks who have acquired it and pass it on to whomever they like. I believe it is spoken of in some circles as, “redistributing the wealth”. Boy howdy, does that have a good Communist ring to it!
It seems to me that the “ones who have acquired it” ought to have some rights too.
And don’t be silly here about genuine concern for the elderly. Nobody cares more than me and you and half a billion other good Americans about anyone that is a mite down on their luck……at any age.
But I don’t think this is a government problem. It’s bigger than that! And it is not always about dollars and cents. It’s more about good “sense.” And self worth plays a major role here. Everyone should age with dignity. Perhaps younger family members could get a little more involved. Like we did it in this country for most of our existence…..
I don’t want the government meddling into my affairs when I get old. I want to sit on the front porch, with a Diet Coke in my hand, and tell my great grandchildren about the time Leon rode that big horse into the lobby up at the Park Theatre…..
