Suffocating defense was critical as the Port St. Joe Jr./Sr. High School boys’ basketball team won a pair of district wins.

The Tiger Sharks are 5-1 overall, 4-0 in District 4-1A.

Port St. Joe started slow but as the defense picked up so did the Tiger Sharks, who were able to pull away for the easy victory.

Lajuan Zaccaro had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, 10 of those rebounds on the offensive end.

“He played well to be just a freshman,” said Port St. Joe coach Sandy Quinn.

Lamarius Martin added 16 points and Jy’Trel Riley added 15 points.

Again, the defense was central to the victory, as the Tiger Sharks smothered the Tigers all game.

“I have a great staff and they have been preaching defense since day one of practice,” Quinn said. “The kids played great defense all night.”

Martin led Port St. Joe with 12 points and Riley added 11 points.

Neshon Gadson and Zaccaro each scored seven points.

Port St. Joe will compete in the North Bay Haven Christmas tournament this weekend.
