Garden Walk series continues for garden club

The popular summer series of garden walks continues for members of the Port St. Joe Garden Club.

Jeanne Schlicting and Wally Bensen hosted the most recent outing at their property in Wewahitchka.

Flowers abounded on the broad front porch, hanging from baskets, sitting on the railings, and overflowing from pots leading up to the front door. Profusely blooming gardenia shrubs perfumed the air.

Wooded areas, a shaded greenhouse, and a productive vegetable plot are prominent features of their acreage. Guests sampled blueberries and raspberries straight off the bush, crushed leaves of herbs to release their aromatic essences, and carried home plants nurtured by Jeanne’s green thumb.

Years ago, while employed in an entirely different field, Jeanne enrolled in the Horticulture program at a community college in North Carolina. It was there as a student that she acquired hands on experience at the school’s Park Seed test garden.

This rich experience led to a lifetime of trial and error learning in her own garden. Jeanne will share her knowledge about growing, using, cooking, and preserving herbs with those who register for her next Encore class at Gulf Coast State College’s Gulf/Franklin County Center.

Jeanne tends what she describes as a demonstration garden for what grows and what doesn’t grow in Gulf County. She aims to be a good steward of the land with regard to her horticultural practices. Wally and Jeanne consider it a stroke of good luck that they discovered the beauty of this region and made it their home in 2007.
