Bense to match donations to non-profit
Former Florida House of Representatives Speaker Allan Bense has pledged to match donations to local nonprofit Whole Child Leon.
Bense, a Republican, served in the Florida House 1998-2006. He represented Gulf, Franklin and parts of Bay counties, and rose to Speaker 2004-06.
He is pledging to match contributions to the nonprofit's "Friends of Whole Child Leon" up to $7,200 through Dec. 31, according to a Friday press release.
Whole Child Leon, established in 2004, is a local nonprofit dedicated to helping nurture young children and foster child growth from mental and physical health to social-emotional well-being.
“The Christmas Season can always be challenging for hard-working families and, especially this year, far too many are struggling in far too many ways,” Bense said in a statement.
“Hopefully, this effort with Whole Child Leon will make a real difference and make the season brighter for families in the Tallahassee area.”
The local nonprofit has worked with such institutions as the Florida State University College of Medicine and the Leon County Sheriff's Office for its initiatives related to childhood development.
The "Friends of Whole Child Leon" campaign asks citizens for contributions of $6 per month with the goal of ensuring that young children thrive in their early years.
“We are committed to ensuring the entire community understands the building blocks for successful relationships and a healthy sense of self are established during the first five years of life,” Whole Child Leon executive director Courtney Atkins said.
“We are extremely grateful to be selected by Speaker Bense this holiday season,” Atkins said.
“His generous commitment to match the gifts of others will ensure an even larger audience has the opportunity to learn about Whole Child and how to get involved.”
