Gators host ‘Gator Brawl’ tournament
The Wewahitchka Jr./Sr. High School wrestling team hosted 21 other teams this past weekend in the “Gator Brawl” Invitational.
Considering that the Gators have just four wrestlers competing this season, and they were competing against some of the best programs in North Florida, Wewahitchka’s 19th place finish was impressive.
The Gators had two wrestlers finish fifth and in entirely different ways.
At 120 pounds, Conner Roberts (31-15 on the season) lost in the opening round and responded by winning seven of his next eight matches in the consolation bracket, the final match an overtime victory in the fifth-place match over Will Ashby from Panama City Beach Arnold.
Meanwhile, Jaden Moseley (28-16) at 132 pounds won just two matches in the first five rounds but powered his way through wrestlebacks while winning five-straight bouts, winning the fifth-place match by decision over Atticus Waters of Pace.
The Gators’ other two wrestlers also earned team points.
Justin Johnson (12-25), at 106 pounds, won four of his first six matches before skidding during wrestlebacks only to respond with a majority decision win over Natalie Lugo from Pace in the ninth-place match.
And Lugo was not the only female wrestling as Wewahitchka’s Kaylee Easter (9-25) took the 15th-place match with by pin over Randall Yates of South Walton High, pinning him in less than two minutes.
