Lady Tiger Sharks win fourth-straight district title

About the most consistent thing a Port St. Joe sports fan can say this time of year is that the Lady Tiger Sharks basketball team is in the state playoffs.

This District 4-1A cake, the fourth in a row, arrived with special icing: the title game victory was also the 300th career victory for Coach Kenny Parker. (see related story).

The Lady Tiger Shark (23-5) will host Sneads 7 p.m. tonight in the region playoffs.

Sneads was a 54-29 loser to Chipley in the District 3-1A tournament. Port St. Joe, which has yet to lose to a Class 1A team all season, beat Sneads 60-32 in late January.

The District 4-1A tournament was hosted by Wewahitchka Jr./Sr. High School with familiar results for the rest of the field.

Port St. Joe 48, Franklin County 17

Franklin County toppled Liberty County in the opening round to earn the right to face top-seeded Port St. Joe, which was 10-0 during the regular season, including two wins over the Lady Seahawks.

The Lady Tiger Sharks had a bye into the semifinals.

Port St. Joe allowed Franklin County a single first-half point in posting a 17-1 lead in the opening quarter and stretching that to 30-1 by halftime.

A 14-0 burst by Franklin County in the fourth quarter made the score much closer than the action.

Mari Johnson and Amani Jones paced Port St. Joe from the front line, Johnson scoring 11 points and adding nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal with Jones adding a double-double, 11 points and 14 rebounds, along with a steal.

Jahneese Brathwaite added eight points, three assists, two blocks, Mimi Larry eight points, six rebouds, two steals and two blocks and India Gant five points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

Jae Lenox had three points, five assists and a rebound and Shadovia Hudgins two points and two steals.

Port St. Joe 59, Blountstown 28

Again a third meeting for Port St. Joe with Blountstown; this one might have beenfor the district title but the ending was similar to the regular season.

Port St. Joe started slow, up just 11-8 after one period but a 19-3 run in the second quarter made it 30-11 at the half.

Port St. Joe continued to pull away in the second half to clinch the program’s fourth consecutive district title.

Lenox helped pace Port St. Joe with 12 points, five assists, four steals and a rebound while Brathwaite added 12 points, four rebounds and one assist and Larry 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Johnson chipped in nine points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two assists, Gant seven points, two rebounds and two assists and Jones seven points, seven rebounds, a steal, assist and block.
