Cheer squads garner awards at ‘Battle at the Fort’

Star Staff Report
The Star

The Forgotten Coast Athletics Tiny, Mini, Junior, and Senior competitive All-Star cheerleading teams spent this past Saturday in Fort Walton Beach at the Victory Spirit Athletics, Battle at the Fort competition.

Each team placed either first or second in their respective categories, with the Junior Leatherbacks garnering both Grand Champion status and a full paid bid to the Emerald Nationals in April.

Forgotten Coast Athletics Gym owner, Stephanie Petersen, said while all teams had terrific performances, the Junior Leatherbacks full paid bid is a significant honor.

“Congratulations to all of our FCA teams,” said Petersen. “Juniors received a full paid bid to Victory Emerald Nationals on April 18-19. This is a huge deal. The brand is paying for the Juniors to compete in their National Event, which will save our team around $1,920.”

Parent and FCA Cheer Booster Treasurer, April Smith, is thrilled with the Junior’s full paid bid win and grateful to be able to keep the focus on the next competition, only weeks away.

“This is a huge win for the athletes, the parents, and the FCA Cheer Boosters,” said Smith. “While we were able to raise over $2,000 at our last Glow Dance Party Fundraiser to cover the cost of the U.S. Finals competition, so this fully paid bid takes a load of stress off our teams. With so many competitions coming up, finding time for another fundraiser was a challenge. We are very grateful for this win.”

FCA Cheer Boosters and Forgotten Coast Athletics invite the public to bring a beach chair and join them in cheering on our athletes at the Gulf Coast Championship on March 28-29 at the Edgewater Beach and Golf Resort in Panama City Beach.

Teams will compete in an intense two-day event, on an oceanfront stage, in the sand, overlooking the Gulf.

“This is our next and closest competition of the season. Whether you are a curious parent that wants to see what competitive cheerleading is about, a friend of an athlete, or a community member that wants to cheer on our team, please come. The Spectator Fee is free, and you can come and go at this competition. Parking at the resort is limited to Edgewater guests; however, overflow parking is located at the Shoppes of Edgewater, so plenty of time is needed to park and walk to the beach. Follow our Facebook pages and Facebook Events for details,” said Petersen.
