Lady Gators improve to 8-0
The Wewahitchka Jr./Sr. High School softball team stretched its winning streak to open the regular season to eight last week with a 7-3 win over Wakulla.
And while the Lady Gators were off this week for spring break, the statewide cancellation of extracurricular activities due to the coronavirus has left the meat of the schedule, including a prestigious invitational tournament, in doubt.
The Lady Gators plated two runs in the first inning against Wakulla courtesy of a Gracie Price single only to have Wakulla tie the score in the second inning.
Wewahitchka took the lead for good in the third inning on an RBI single by Haley Guffey and added another run in the fifth before breaking the game open with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Tamiah Rouse had an RBI single and Morgan Mayhann an RBI double during the inning.
The Lady Gators pounded out 10 hits, with Guffey, Price and Rouse each with two hits.
Guffey earned the victory in relief, going the final four innings while allowing three hits and one run while striking out nine.
Savannah Lister started in the circle for Wewahitchka, tossing three innings and allowing three hits and two runs, walking one.
