NASCAR Q&A: What? They've already nixed most practice and qualifying for 2021?

The Daytona Beach News-Journal

Kinda quick to pull the plug on practice and qualifying, wouldn’t you say?

Not when you consider how far in advance most of the teams work to prepare, not just in terms of building cars, but budgeting weekend travel and budgeting personnel needs and everything else that goes into putting a season-long plan in place. But NASCAR has long held onto an asterisk and italic standby for all of its scheduling: * Subject to change. If it becomes feasible to loosen the reins as the season moves along, they could do that, but given those long-range budgeting concerns, I doubt they’ll whip out the asterisk this year.

Remember the good ol' days of the Busch Pole Award?

Are we missing much?

They’ll hold practice and/or qualifying at three big events (Daytona 500, Coke 600 and championship race at Phoenix) and the five new venues for 2021 (new road courses plus Bristol’s dirt race). Watching the old system during those weekends might tell us whether we actually miss it or not. If nothing else, however, practice and qualifying gives us a chance to learn what color and logo scheme teams put in play for that particular week.
